| Proserpinaca palustris, known as Mermaid weed is native to the United States. It has two distinct growth forms. Above water the leaves are solid with serrated edges, while underwater the leaves become finely toothed, (denticulated) and varius shades of red. It is interesting to watch this plant transform. While the underwater leaves have the appearance of being sharp and pointy, in fact they are not the least bit sharp and pose no threat to any fish or anmal. It needs moderate to bright light, (the deeper the water that it is in, the more light it needs), and it grows slowly. When Aqua Botanic recieves this plant from the nurery, it is in its above water growth form, but the longer we keep the plants before they are sold, the more they have converted to their underwater form. Sometimes the stems will show both growth forms. |
