Plant of the month
November: Nuphar
Nuphar-this month we are featuring two species of Nuphar, aka Spadderdock: Nuphar lutea var sagittifolia, "Cape Fear spatterdock", and Nuphar lutea var round leaf, "Round leaf spadderdock. These water lilies have bright yellow flowers when grown outdoors.
The Cape Fear spatterdock has the same translucent yellow green leaves as its japanese cousin Nuphar japonica, except its leaves are more elongated and have wavy edges. Both Cape fear and round leaf are relatively easy to grow and good choices for either low tech or high tech set ups. These plants are slow growers so be patient! Perfect for cold water, native fish, goldfish, Koi, or tropical.
If you have a pond, move them to the pond in the spring to see their beautiful yellow flowers. Young plants need phosphate within reach of the tuber to develop good roots. A basic NPK fertilizer tablet will do the trick. Give these plants a try!
